On the podcast this week is Kelly Rutherford. Kelly is best known for her work as an actor, starring in Gossip Girl, Melrose Place, Dynasty and Pretty Little Liars, but truly it’s her soul and perspective that sets her apart.

In today’s episode, we chat about where Kelly's acting journey began, the power of shifting our perspective towards joy and empowerment, the questions about joy we all need to ask, and children as our teachers. Kelly shares the connection between spirituality and creativity, how we can take our power back by seeing the good, appreciating others, looking for the joy, choosing gratitude, and allowing ourselves grace. Plus, we have a wonderful conversation about learning to trust and allow, making ourselves happy first and looking within, her biggest dream, and so much more!

This is such a beautiful conversation and it was an honor to sit in this space with Kelly. I can’t wait to hear what you think of today’s episode! Make sure to join the conversation on Instagram, Facebook and Twitter!

We are celebrating THREE YEARS of Seek The Joy Podcast on October 3rd! We’re celebrating this year on Zoom and I’d love for you to join! Save the date for Saturday October 3rd at 2pm PT and RSVP here!

Joy comes from appreciation and gratitude, that’s really where joy comes from. Joy comes from saying I like the feeling of joy, and I choose to look for things that make me feel joy, and speak words that make me feel joy, and be around people that reflect that joy back to me. It’s the key to everything.

It’s my belief that our natural state is allowing instead of resisting, forcing, and trying to make it happen. It’s not that we don’t take action, but that the intention and energy behind the action is different when you’re allowing yourself to be, and connect with what’s true for you.
— Kelly Rutherford

Kelly was born in Kentucky and grew up in California where she began her acting career. Best known for her roles on Melrose Place and Gossip Girl, she is a mother, artist, and an overall incredibly kind human being.

Today’s episode is a beautiful exploration of trust, allowing ourselves to be, the power of giving ourselves grace, and what happens when we look at situations in our lives through one simple question, what is the most empowering way to look at this?

There are so many experiences and moments in our lives that leave us feeling disempowered or powerless, and especially now in the midst of a global pandemic and quarantine, it’s not always easy or innate to look at challenges or difficulties that way! As Kelly shares, so much of what we experience is part of our mission, our purpose. It’s up to us to decide how we’re going to transform those challenging moments into our purpose.

For Kelly, trust and allowing ourselves to be, go hand in hand. As Kelly shares, she believes that our natural state is allowing instead of resisting, and when we let go of the stress and worry, and we get quiet and allow the answers to come, the energy of the moment shows up. It’s within that space that you learn to trust. As with anything, it’s a process of trial and error, and we learn from the contrast, because it’s within the contrast that we learn about our likes and dislikes and our preferences. (I can’t wait for you to hear this part of the episode!)

If you shift your perspective, your whole world changes! The energy you engage with and what you’re attracting, and unless it was taught in your home, or you were given that book, or you went to that seminar, it’s not something that you were taught. It’s such a source of joy, empowerment, and love.
— Kelly Rutherford

Kelly is incredibly spiritual, and I was curious how she’s been able to see the world and herself through this deep and beautiful lens of consciousness, togetherness, and love. Her answer? Through both life experience and from creating, she’s been able to expand her beliefs, tap deeper into her own knowing, and shift her perspective towards joy, empowerment, and love. Kelly was always drawn to people that believed in something more, and that there’s more than just the day-to-day. The idea of being infinite creators of our world and experience, was both empowering and frightening at the same time! Once she realized that we’re in control of our experience, and that our thoughts really do create our reality, everything shifted.

Joy is the key to everything and it shifts our perspective. As Kelly shares, our joy comes from appreciation and gratitude, and the questions around joy that Kelly shares are POWERFUL and eye-opening. How beautiful is that?!

Within that exploration of our joy, our preferences, and our perspective is an opportunity to give ourselves grace. We give ourselves that grace, and choose that grace, through our own unique expression.

Thank you Kelly for such a beautiful, powerful and joy filled conversation, one I know so many of us will have on repeat!
