On the podcast this week is Asha Tarry, an author, award-winning community mental health advocate, psychotherapist, and certified life coach.

As a treating provider, Asha has the experience and skill to transform lives - and that’s exactly what she’s doing.

As a mindfulness practitioner, she’s coached and consulted individuals and groups of people throughout the US, Asia, Africa, and Europe on personal development, lifestyle, and wellness.

In this week’s new episode we chat about Asha’s journey becoming a mental health advocate and licensed therapist, being of service while also experiencing what you’re helping others transform, and anxiety and difficult emotions as an experience, and not a characteristic. Asha shares how we can continue to process tough things, do the important work, and practice self-care, all while empowering ourselves in our own activism. Plus, we have an incredible conversation about not denying our experiences with trauma, the importance of empathy as a practice, creating emotional safety for people who have never felt safe, joy existing at the same time as pain, Asha’s biggest dream, and so much more!

This is such a beautiful and powerful conversation, and I’m so happy that Asha and I sat down to have this conversation! I can’t wait to hear what you think! Make sure to join the conversation on Instagram, Facebook and Twitter!

Think about where you are right now in this moment. Think about how you feel, in this moment. Think about what you’re looking at, listening to, and what you’re absorbing because sensory overload creates panic, anxiousness, restlessness, sleeplessness, difficulty digesting food, concentrating on your work, listening to others, and supporting yourself. There are so many things that happen when you’re looking at and listening to tragedies, faced with corruption, angst, coercion and violence.

We often look for external validation, but validating ourselves is of utmost importance first. When we do that, when we notice there’s an us, there’s a me, there’s a you, then we can become more aware that sometimes things are not personal, that sometimes it’s not about people not caring enough. We should look for ourselves in the midst of everything that’s going on, and in doing so we notice what’s happening, what we’re experiencing, and what we want to experience next.

Asha Tarry is an author, an award-winning community mental health advocate, psychotherapist, and certified life coach. As a treating provider, Asha has 20 years of experience providing evaluations, diagnoses, treatment, and life-enhancing skills to children, adults, families, and couples.

A significant portion of Asha’s work has been conducted in marginalized communities with survivors of intergenerational trauma as well as with professionals in search of a fulfilling life. As a writer and speaker for several publications, which once included one of the nation’s largest online medical news outlets in the black community, BlackDoctor.org, Asha has effectively demonstrated anecdotal evidence that therapy works and that mindfulness is a holistic way of healing oneself on a continuous basis.

Asha’s new book, “Adulting As A Millennial: A Guide to Everything Your Parents Didn’t Teach You” was mostly written for millennials who deal with anxiety, imposter syndrome, and relationship challenges, and is set to transform 100k+ lives. The purpose of this book is to help Gen-Y create more joy in their lives, while also surrendering the beliefs that trap them from living in the now. In the book, I offer anecdotes as supportive evidence of my own transformation, as well as mindset shifts to help them develop new ways of showing up with more intention, compassion and confidence.

To give people permission for the first time in their lineage, not just right now, their lineage, to say you can be right where you are, and I’m going to witness it with you so that you don’t do this work by yourself, so that you know you’ll be okay, and I’ll hold you in that way. It’s spiritual sacred work, and it should be treated as such.
— Asha Tarry

Asha’s work as a mindfulness practitioner has been utilized by professionals in the United States, Asia, and Europe with partnerships through Thrive Global, an Arianna Huffington company, to prevent employees from experiencing workplace burnout. The goal of Asha’s work is to enlighten, educate, and create safe spaces for everyone, from children to the elderly to live more emotionally empowered and mentally resilient. Her upcoming book is called Adulting as a Millennial: A Guide to Everything Your Parents Didn’t Teach You.
